Shield twice parted per fess of Gules, Or and Vert, above an embattled wall Argent with port Sable, topped by an embattled tower Argent, in centre a stag salient Gules, hunted by a hound salient Gules, beneath plain Vert (lawn).
Meaning:
Wall and tower are symbolising the feistiness of the city. Hound and stag are obviously alluding to the rights of a market town to St. Giles (Ägidius), granted in 1284. Giles is among others said to be the patron saint of hare hunting. His attributes hare and hound had been part of the arms until the middle of the 18th century. The original deed had been stolen at the beginning of the 18th century. And the hare probably had been replaced by a stag by lack of knowledge.
