Shield Gules, a knight in armour Argent with coat and plume Or, mounted on a horse Argent bridled Or, killing a dragon Vert in base by a lance Or.
Meaning:
Gößnitz became a dominion of the Margraves of Meißen since 1328 and of the Ernestine branch of the Wettin kin in 1554, together with the Altenburg district (German: Amt). In 1718 the village gained city rights and the right to establish guilds. The city rights became valid completely in 1874. The St. George Convent in Altenburg became the manorial lord partially in 1413 and completely in 1519. After the Protestant reformation it was secularised and became part of a district under direct rule of the Wettin kin. The knight is st.George, alluding to the namesake convent, having been the manorial lord.
