In the centre of the flag is a coloured city seal (see: left image above) or in a flag in use a centred shield (see right image above) with the charges of the seal without circumscription.

Please note, that officially the city of Aken has no proper arms but in the centre of the flag described in Hauptsatzung is a coloured image of a city seal as follows:
Background Azure, beneath a Gothic arch Or topped by a crosslet and between two embattled round towers Argent, both masoned Sable with a cone roof Gules on a pedestal a bishop, rising his right hand to swear an oath and holding a crozier in his left hand; each tower is flanked outward by a red over white inescutcheon charged with a moor's (i.e. negroe's) head.
The seal has on a golden edge a black inscription as follows: "SIGNETUM BURGENSIUM URBIS AQUENSIS FIDELIS FILIAE ECCLESIAE MAGDEBURGENSIS" (= seal of the citizens of the city of Aken, the faithful daughter of the church [in] Maghdeburg).
This flag and seal had already been reported by Stefan Schwoon on 27 January 2002, based on §2 of the local Hauptsatzung, version 11 September 2004. According to Thomas Rystau the flag had never been approved officially and the city had to eke out its right to use the flag in court.
