The spa was founded by the king of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor, Charles
IV (1346-1378); it received a charter in 1470 and became a royal town in
1707. The Karlovy Vary (German: Carlsbad) arms go back to the times of
Charles IV and bear the Czech lion issuing from the curative waters.
