Overview

The flag of Colón - Génova is at <colongenova-narino.gov.co>.
Translated from this web site:
"The two green stripes represent the ecological awareness as well as agriculture and agroindustry, which are the base of the economy of the municipality; the most significative products are coffee, bananas, fruits, "paja toquilla*", sugarcane and cattle.
The upper green stripe represents the region of cold mountains where are found cattle, most of the natural woods where the rivers have their source. Irrigated by these rivers, the lower part of the municipality is represented by the lower green stripe, as a zone of mild climate conducive to the cultivation of coffee, fruits, bananas, "paja toquilla*", sugarcane, cassava etc...
The median white stripe represents peace, work, honesty, culture, kindness, enthousiasm, concord, tranquility and womens' beauty, a set of qualities for which the municipality is especially renowned in Nariño and in Colombia."
* "paja toquilla" is the South American name of the palm tree "Carludovica palmata" (Panama-hat palm), whose leaves are used to make the famous Panama hats. The tree does not grow in Panama but in Amazonia; however, the first shippings of leaves to Europe were made from Panama, therefore the erroneous name given to the hats."
