The Commune of Calama in the Province of El Loa, has two flags. One is as the one we already have in FOTW, and the additional flag was adopted in 2014 through public contest, documented at https://www.elnortero.cl/noticia/sociedad/la-comuna-de-calama-ya-tiene-una-nueva-bandera.
With 48.84% of the votes, Víctor Rojas Tabilo, who worked under the pseudonym André, became the winner of the Una Bandera Para Calama Communal Contest, an initiative that arose from the Municipal Council itself and was framed within the activities to celebrate the 135th anniversary of the Land of Sun and Copper.
From the hands of councilors Dinka López and Juan Zebra, Rojas received a copper statuette made especially for the occasion—in addition to $1,000,000—in recognition of his work, originality and citizen participation.
The creator of the winning flag, born and raised by a Calama family, indicated that to have this result "I tried to represent what I consider important for my city, which is a bit of the lost memory it has, the roots, wanting to rescue the identity, and I tried to capture it in a flag that carried the colors used by pre-Hispanic textiles, and representative colors of Calama." At the same time, the symbol in the center of the design stands out, called the Chacana or Andean Cross, and which has the purpose of remembering that our land is and has been the focus of the development of people since time immemorial.
Both flags are in use.
