The anchor on the flag of Melide is an evident symbol for this lake-village partially built on a
natural dam.
Melide is also the place where you can see all the major monuments of Switzerland in
miniature (Swissminiatur).
Pascal Gross, 9 July 2003
The dam of Melide is not natural, although Melide has a headland. From 1818 until the construction of a
bridge-dam in 1847 there
was a regular ferry service between Melide and Bissone
(Those communes are on the Gotthard route). The anchor in the
emblem refers to that time. In 1854 the
bridge-dam was expanded to a dam, which was widened in 1874 for the construction of the
railway. In 1968 the
motorway A2 was added, so that today three traffic lines cross this passage over the
Lake Lugano
(aka Ceresio).
