The emblem of the new commune shows a leaf of the chestnut tree (castanea sativa), a tree which is very typical for Ticino. It is the only emblem in Ticino which only shows a leaf of that tree, in contrast to the depictions with whole trees or branches.

On 14 March 2005 the new commune of Alto Malcantone was formed through the merger of Arosio, Breno, Fescoggia, Mugena and Vezio (see below).

The flowers on the flag of Arosio are from rhododendron (in Italian rosa delle Alpi, literally translated "rose from the Alps"). The name of the commune is probably derived from roseto (rose garden), rhododendrons being quite common in this area.

The reversed chevron on the flag of Vezio alludes to the initial of its name, the mount of 3 coupeaux symbolizes Poncione di Breno, Tamaro and Gradicioli, three mountains encircling the village.
