The emblem shows the cross of Schwyz in the upper part; and two symbols of the municipality of Muotathal, the Muota river and the mountains, in the lower part. Muotathal is named after its valley Muotatal, which is named after the Muota river. Muota was formed of Muot (anger, rage) and Aa, Ach (river), so it means raging river.
