On 1 Mai 2022 the districts of Schwende and Rüte formed the new district of Schwende-Rüte.

The flag and arms are those of the von Schönenbüel family, they commemorate the first Landammann elected by the people, Hermann von Schönenbüel. He was the first to campaign for independence from the prince-abbot of St. Gallen.

The tower represents Rachenstein castle, built around 1080 by Ulrich III, prince-abbot of St. Gallen. It served as a place of refuge for him during times of war. It was destroyed by the people of Schwende at the beginning of the Appenzell Wars.
