The BDP/PBD was founded in 2008 as a more moderate scission from the right-conservative SVP / UDC. The party has its strongholds in the German-speaking parts of Switzerland, particularly in Graubünden, Bern and Glarus. Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf since 2008 (presumably only until the end of 2015) is member of the Swiss government for the BDP.

The party symbol consists of a black and a yellow field, the latter one charged with the party abbreviation.

The flag is white with the (German-language) symbol [1,2,3].

The cantonal party section of Graubünden uses a beach flag, white, with a yellow border and the party symbol; in this case the black field of the symbol contains a white ibex as a reference to the cantonal coat-of-arms, and the party abbreviation is bilingual (BDP PBD) [6].
