Fogo is a small port town of 805 people located on an island of the same
name. According to the town website it was first mapped around 1529 by Diogo
Ribeiro, a Portguese sailor working for the Spanish crown. The town was first
settled in the early 1700s. As expected, the town has a long maritime history
(particularly related to fishing) and is the oldest settlement north of
Bonavista Bay.
