The design now in use was submitted for approval to the Garter
King of Arms in 1973. The head of the College of Arms, Sir
Anthony Wagner, recommended that the gold and aquamarine stripes
should change places. However the Cabinet decided to ignore this
"improvement" and the original design was adopted.
