Universidade Estadual do Rio Grande do Sul (UERGS) was established by State Law No. 11,646 promulgated on 10 July 2001. UERGS is composed of 24 units organized in seven regional campuses:
- Region I: Guaíba, Litoral Norte - Osório, Novo Hamburgo, Porto Alegre
- Region II: Bento Gonçalves, Caxias do Sul, Encantado, Montenegro, São Francisco de Paula, Vacaria
- Region III: Botucaraí - Soledade, Cruz Alta, Erechim, Frederico Westphalen, Sananduva
- Region IV: São Luiz Gonzaga, Três Passos
- Region V: Cachoeira do Sul, Santa Cruz do Sul
- Region VI: Alegrete, Bagé, Santana do Livramento, São Borja
- Region VII: Tapes.
UERGS offers classes in Human Sciences, Exact Sciences and Engineering, Sciences of Life and Environment.
