The so-called Sabinada Revolt was an 1837-38 insurgency against the regency government following
the abdication of Emperor Pedro I. The revolt was led by Francisco Sabino Álvares da Rocha
Vieira, whence its name. The insurgents declared the independence of Bahia on 7 November 1837 and
were defeated on 15 March 1838. The flag was a blue-white-blue vertical triband, putting it in the tradition of
other blue and white banners from the Bahian revolutions of 1798 and
1832.
