The municipality of Sorriso (66,506 inh. in 2010; 934,600 ha) is located in
the north of Mato Grosso, 412 km of Cuiabá. It started in
1979 as a private
project colonization, most of the colonists coming from the south of
Brazil. The municipality was formed on 13 May 1986 (State Law 5002/89) with
territories taken from the municipalities of Nobres, Diamantino and Sinop. It
includes the districts of Boa Esperança, Caravágio and Primavera.
The
green rectangle (background of the flag) represents the abundant vegetation.
The white lozenge symbolizes peace, courage and fraternity of the men of good
will, as well as the audacity and courage of the pioneers. The blue square
represents the blue immensity of the horizon. In the middle of a white disk,
the soybean plant represents the base of the local economy - Sorriso is
considered as the first soybean producer in Brazil. Soybean, rice (shown in
the lozenge's left part) and maize (shown in the lozenge's right part) are
the three key crops of the municipality. The yellow ring surrounding the
white disk represents the economic progress; the white disk represents faith,
honor and work. The red scroll symbolizes the fight and perseverance of the
pioneers who built Sorriso in the middle of the Mato Grosso primary forest.
