Vareš is an old town, originating in the pre-Roman times, when it was already known as a site of iron ore mining and processing. Due to the mines, it was an important town in medieval Bosnia as well, and in the modern period. From the Ottoman period a single-arched stone bridge is
preserved, similar in style to the famous Mostar bridge.
In the vicinity of Vareš is situated the old Castle Bobovac, the seat of the Bosnian rulers from mid-1300s until the end of the medieval
Bosnian state in the mid-1400s.

The coat of arms of Vareš is prescribed by Decision Odluka o grbu Općine Vareš, adopted on 17 October 2002 by the Municipal Assembly (text).
The coat of arms depicts in a white shield a red skyline in the chief, a gray fort and a bridge over two hammers in saltire between four mullets of five or placed 2 and 2 an a green base. The fort represents the old Castle Bobovac, the hammers stand for the mining tradition and the bridge shape is visible.
