As early as 1588, Emperor Rudolf II had granted the town market rights and its own coat of arms. Even
then, viticulture was the dominant economic activity in Weiden am See, whose name is derived from the
Middle High German phrase "bi den Widen" (by the willow trees).

Description: A red shield crossed in the center by a natural river and bearing the Latin inscription
"Lacus Fertö" [Fertö is the Hungarian name of the lake]. From a green triple hill rising
from the base of the shield, two intersecting green vines grow upward, bearing two red clusters of grapes.
In the upper part, on the right and left, are two golden stars; in the center is a large silver W, the
initial of the town's name.
