The name Mönchhof (monks' farmyard) derives from its association with the monks of Heiligenkreuz.
Around 800 years ago, Cistercian monks from Heiligenkreuz Abbey settled in the area around what is now
Mönchhof. They reclaimed the land, which had previously been mostly marshland. In 1217, King Andrew II
of Hungary granted them the former Pecheneg estate of Leginthov as a perpetual possession. The deed of gift
from 1217 mentions the municipality of Mönchhof for the first time under the name Leginthov.
Winegrowing has traditionally been the economic backbone of the community. Dating back to the initiatives
of the Cistercian monks, who brought their knowledge from Burgundy via Heiligenkreuz to Mönchhof, the
village is regarded as Austria's oldest wine-growing community.

swear an oath of loyalty and proper stewardship to the landowners.
