Presentation of Verdinaso

The Verbond van Dietsche Nationaal-Solidaristen (Verdinaso - Union of Dutch National Solidarists, "Dietschland", old spelling, being the Low Countries) was an extreme right-wing political movement in Flanders and, nominally, in the Netherlands before and during the Second World War.
Founded in 1931, formally merged with the VNV in 1941, the party evolved from a pan-Dutch standpoint to a Belgian one but always stressed corporatism and strong leadership. It did not recover from the sumary execution of its leader, Joris Van Severen (1894-1940), at the outbreak of the war.

Flag of Verdinaso

The flag of Verdinaso (photo) is orange with a white disk, shifted to the hoist, containing the blue symbol of the party, combining a plough (representing agriculture), a gear (representing industry), and an upright sword (representing combat). Vertical flags (photo) were also used.
The pennant of Verdinaso (photo) was a triangular version of the party's flag.

Jong Dinaso

According to Nieuwe Encyclopedie van de Vlaamse Beweging (New Encyclopedia of the Flemish Movement, 1998), Jong Dinaso (Young Dinaso) was founded in 1931 as Verdinasok or Verbond van Dinaso Knapenvendels (Union of Dinaso Boy Platoons) and renamed after a monthly magazine two years later. Boys aged 12-18 could join; Kleindinaso (Small Dinaso) was organized to attract boys aged 6-12.
Never very large - counting a few hundred members at the most - Jong Dinaso disappeared in 1941, when Verdinaso was made to merge with VNV, to the advantage of the VNV youth movement soon to become the NSJV (Nationaal-Socialistische Jeugd Vlaanderen - National Socialist Youth Flanders).

The flag of Young Dinaso (photo) was a square orange banner with a schwenkel and five loops, bearing a broad white ring charged with the party emblem, very small, in greyish blue (originally, and logically, blue) in base and a large bird, probably the mythical Blauwvoet, also in greyish blue (or blue), in the centre, flying towards the hoist, with wings spreading beyond the ring.

Units of Verdinaso

A photo shows a square white-fringed orange banner with seven loops, a white disk in centre bearing the Verdinaso emblem, the unit indication in black or dark blue in the upper hoist, as "III / 21", and in base place name in white "ABBEVILLE" and date in white "20 MEI 1940".
If authentic, the banner was made, or dedicated, after leader Joris van Severen's execution in Abbeville, France, which occurred on 20 May 1940.

Green banner of Verdinaso

A photo shows a square orange-fringed mint green banner with four loops, in the centre the white party's emblem on a black, white bordered shield; the white Roman numeral "III" in top corner, the name "JAN RYCKOORT" (small letters) in white above the shield; in base, the large white motto "RECHT EN TROUW", accompanied above by the small white place name "ABBEVILLE" and date" 20 MEI 1940".
Here again, the place and date of leader Joris van Severen's execution are evoked (Ryckoort was also killed on that occasion) whereas the slogan means "Right and loyalty".

Since the field is green, as were Verdinaso's shirts, the flag may be connected with the party militia D.M.O. (Dinaso Militanten Orde - Dinaso Militants' Order).
A filmlet of Verdinaso's last yearly rally, 11 September 1938, shows lots of flags including some gonfanons and other banners with morning star finial; van Severen is seen handing over a banner resembling the green one in the photo, or even the same item without, evidently, the date and names.
