"Vaandel" is related to German "Fahne".
Jan Mertens, Oct 2007

While true, it’s more that "vaandel" derives from "vendel" (no longer in use with a flag meaning), which was a diminutive form of "vaan". "Vaan", then is related to "Fahne" in German.
Peter Hans van den Muijzenberg, 24 Oct 2007

Remarks:
seldom use

Seldom used is "vaan"; plural "vanen".
Jan Mertens, Oct 2007

Diminutive of "vaan" is "vaandeltje". "Vendel" (no longer in use with a flag meaning) was a diminutive form of "vaan"; "vaandel" derives from "vendel". "Vaan", then is related to "Fahne" in German. What is still in use in Dutch is the diminutive of "vaan": "vaantje", which more or less translates to pennant, in the sense of a sports pennant.
Peter Hans van den Muijzenberg, 24 Oct 2007

"Vaan" is related to "Fahne" in German and "vane" in English: All of them eventually come from Germanic either "gundfano" ("gund-fano" = "war-cloth", which one would expect to be related to "gonfanon" / "gonfalon" somehow), or directly from "fano", "cloth". In Old-Frisian this was "fona", hence the modern Sealtersk "Foone" and Frasch "foone".
Peter Hans van den Muijzenberg, 24 Oct 2007

Word " vaandeltje "

Word:
vaandeltje
Script:
Latin
Variant:
diminutive of "vaan"

Word " vaantje " (="sports pennant")

Word:
vaantje
Script:
Latin
Meaning:
sports pennant
Variant:
diminutive of "vaan"

What is still in use in Dutch is the diminutive of "vaan": "vaantje", which more or less translates to pennant, in the sense of a sports pennant.
Peter Hans van den Muijzenberg, 24 Oct 2007

Word " vanen "

Word:
vanen
Script:
Latin
Variant:
plural of "vaan"

Word " banier " (="banner")

Word:
banier
Script:
Latin
Etym. family:
*band-
Meaning:
banner
(See 1 wordform more identical to this.)

"Banier" is related to French "bannière".
Jan Mertens, Oct 2007

Dim. "baniertje". I expect this is related to all the bandera-s etc.
Peter Hans van den Muijzenberg, 24 Oct 2007

Word " baniertje "

Word:
baniertje
Script:
Latin
Variant:
diminutive of "banier"

Word " banderol " (="pennant")

Word:
banderol
Script:
Latin
Etym. family:
*band-
Meaning:
pennant

Taken from French, "banderol" means "pennant", in more or less the same sense as "wimpel". It’s no longer current, but you still see the occasional use for effect.
Peter Hans van den Muijzenberg, 24 Oct 2007
