It is a fairily typical portuguese municipal flag,
with the coat of arms centered on a quartered background
(town status) of yellow and

The arms are Argent issuan from a campaign wavy wavy Vert and Argent a
caravel Or ornamented and roped and masted and anchored Sable and dressed
Argent between two maize ears Or leved Vert and on the chief a goshawk Proper
holding an escutcheon Azure charged with five plates Argent set in saltire.

variations: plain flags always carry the coat of arms.

Povoação municipality had 6726 inhabitants in 2001 and consists
of 6 communes covering 110,30 km², taking up the southeastern
part of St. Michael Island (São Miguel). It
is part of Azores Region (also a NUTS II and
traditional province), former Ponta Delgada
District. "Povoação" means simply "settlement".
