Presentation of Worms

Worms was founded in 1848 for the importation of English coal to France. The Worms fleet was launched in 1858. Following the inauguration of the Suez Canal in 1869, Worms opened an office in Port-Said. The company owned its private shipyard in Le Trait (Normandy).
Worms developed all kind of shipping activities during the 20th century. At the same time, the company became an international merchant bank and business group. The shipping company was renamed Compagnie Navale Worms in 1971.
In 1986, Compagnie Navale Worms was merged with Compagnie Nationale de Navigation, purchased from the oil group Elf. The new company retained the name of Compagnie Nationale de Navigation. In 1998, Worms ceded 54.4% of the shares of the company to the Compagnie Maritime Belge holding.

Société Française de Transports Pétroliers

[SFTP house flag]

SFTP was formed in 1938, at the request of the French Government to increase the oil transporting capacity under French control, by a consortium which included Worms & Cie, hence the flag being the reverse of the Worms colours. Around 1971 it appears to have become a full Worms subsidiary via Société Française de Transports Maritimes and disappeared from Lloyds around the beginning of the 1980s.
