I was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1955, and grew up in rural Ayrshire, passionate about Geography, before going to study Geology at Aberdeen. Waiting for the boat to sail to a geological posting in Antarctica, I embarked on graduate studies in Canada where I discovered (a) that graduate degrees cannot be done in 9 months, (b) how much I enjoyed teaching, and (c) that Canada was cold enough for me. Following degrees at Queen's University and the University of Calgary, I accepted at teaching position at Acadia University, in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, where I have remained since.
Flags had been in interest for me from age 4, when I painted a globe with the nations of the world, and added their flags on pins. With the arrival of the Internet, the world of flags opened up for me from a few library volumes and occasional sightings to the full realms of vexillology. Joining FOTW in 1995, I soon started editing for Giuseppe Bottasini, before taking over when he moved on to other projects in 1998. I continue to work as editor on the British and Canadian pages.
