City of Esens (Samtgemeinde* Esens, Wittmund county, Lower Saxony)

Description of flag:
It is a light blue over yellow horizontal bicolour with the city’s coat of arms in the centre, which is topped by a black inscription “Esens”.
Source: I spotted this flag on 30 April 2009 on the road from Esens to Neuharlingersiel.

The ratio is given as 1:2. It was a blue over white over black horizontal tricolour.

Description of coat of arms:
In a silver field is a red embattled tower masoned black and flanked by a red fence on its sinister side. On top of the tower is a black rampant demi bear, tongued red, wearing a golden necklace and holding a red brick between his paws in a threatening pose.
Another description in German is given in §2 (1) of “Hauptsatzung der Stadt Esens”, dated 15 December 1997, published on 4 May 1998 in „Amtblatt für den Landkreis Wittmund Nr.6“.
